“In my attempts to articulate space, the work usually gives me the instructions. I just have to tune my head to the right frequency to hear what it needs. My marching orders usually include picking-up a paintbrush, pair of scissors, pen or pencil and make something happen. Once the first gesture is down there is something to respond to. A call and response ensues. Things can get tricky.” Andrew Zarou works with collage using all sorts of found paper such as lottery tickets, magazine cutouts, cigarette foil and others in combination with a meticulous layering process of paint and drawing. The layers present themselves as purely abstract but within them there are systems that suggest aerial views of roadways or paths. In his mixing of the different elements, one layer is usually reflective of a previous one that is then spun out to further the composition. Andrew Zarou was born in Brooklyn in 1971 and still lives and works there. He majored in painting at Hampshire College from 1990 – 1994; from 1993 – 2003 he concentrated on playing music, singing and playing guitar in the bands Skinner Pilot, and The Deer Park. Zarou’s work as a visual artist has been shown at PS1 and in the Pierogi flat files traveling exhibition, Brooklyn. He has recently shown at Hogar Collection in Brooklyn and in June will participate in a group show at Outrageous Look, also in Brooklyn.
